This is an example of one of the iconic Alvar Aalto's K60 stool produced by Artek.
It has been fully restored in our atelier.
When we found it, it was in a bad shape, so we gave it new life, by sanding the old varnish off and applied a light mat varnish instead. The seat had also seen better days, so we replaced the thin top veneer with a thick piece of naturally tanned leather.
We hope it can get another good 60 years in a new home.
Alvar Aalto was an architect and designer from Finland (1898-1976). He graduated with a degree in architecture from the Helsinki Institute of Technology in 1921, where his studies had been interrupted by the Finnish Civil War. In 1923, he established an architectural studio in Jyväskylä, Finland, but later moved it to Turku. Aalto’s aesthetic developed though several styles, following the times. He explored Neo-classism, Functionalism and in the 1930s his style moved towards a less rigid Rationalism with an eye for nature’s organic models, only to embrace modernism durring the 1950s.
He was of a strong conviction that there should be a connection between the item and the surrounding environment and was committed to the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), emphasizing fluidity between his projects’ surrounding environments and their interiors. In 1932 he designed the Paimio Sanatorium, where the architecture was driven by the idea that the building itself could contribute to the healing process. He was always driven by combining materials and design in multiple ways to satisfy various environments and the users’ needs.
In 1935, Aalto met factory owners Maire and Harry Gullischsen, with whom he launched Artek. The furniture company manufactured and sold Aalto’s designs up till this day.
