Improved Danish Oil
Tung Oil is Tung Oil and Raw Linseed Oil is (to some extent) Raw Linseed Oil. Danish oil on the other hand, is a mix of different ingredients that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Danish oil has been used to finish wood for several hundred years. Our distant ancestors mainly used linseed oil to finish their wooden workpieces with the purpose of protecting against wood rot. To achieve a shine to the finished result, was not easy with linseed oil. No, for shine you had to use a so-called varnish consisting of dissolved resins. But then again, those varnishes were, as it were, on top of the wood instead of being absorbed so nicely deeply. So on the one hand we had linseed oil that did impregnate, but did not shine very much and on the other hand we had varnish that did not impregnate but did shine. It was therefore just a matter of time before someone addedthese two ingredients together in order to make something that was impregnated, but which would also give a nice shine with enough layers.
We have not been able to find out who it was so far, but it is obvious to assume that it was a Dane who developed such a nice recipe that made this mix go out into the world as Danish oil. Even now, Danish oil is still widely used by, for example, wood turners and to protect outdoor work. The mix of ingredients differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, as mentioned, but one of the disadvantages of the traditional Danish oils is the fact that quite a few layers of it are required before the wood is saturated. De Cokerije have been able to improve this property. Our improved Danish oil is a charcoal of natural, drying oils and rosin in particular. This Danish oil therefore gets a strong, wear-resistant film and a great impregnation capacity. Colophonium is added to our Danish oil to give the Danish oil a higher shine.
